April 2007
If you haven't heard of the Windows Presentation Foundation yet, you have now. WPF is a new presentation technology from Microsoft aimed at creating rich UI targeting the Windows Vista platform. Mike Meyers and Chris Andrade of Novera Consulting have co-authored a book, along with Shawn Livermore and Scott Van Vliet, on professional programming using the WPF framework. The book, aptly named "Professional WPF Programming" was released April 1st 2007 and is available in bookstores worldwide. To use an old cliche, we believe WPF is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The possibilites for creating visually rich, highly interactive and responsive UI is key to delivering a stunning user experience. WPF makes this possible. The book focuses on both fundamentals and key aspects of the platform in order to familiarize developers with what is possible using WPF. The book also introduces Microsoft's new XAML markup language, which is used by WPF to markup and define UI. One benefit of XAML is that it bridges the workflow divide between designers and developers. Using WPF and XAML, designers are now tightly integrated into the development process. Additionally, the book also takes a short dive into Windows Communication Foundation and Windows Workflow Foundation, which are new platforms related to WPF by the .NET 3.0 platform stack. Although this was Mike's first authoring endeavor, this was not a first for Chris. In a prior life, Chris co-authored the book entitled 'New Masters of Flash'. Both Mike and Chris are now in the process of co-authoring a new book together initially entitled 'Professional Silverlight Programming' for WROX Press that will explore the exciting new RIA platform from Microsoft, Silverlight.
